An oncologist is a trained physician that specializes and/or has advanced training in diagnosing, managing, and treating cancerous tumors. Being an oncologist, one of the job responsibilities they have are talking with patients and their physicians about treatments. Another is completing exams such as x-rays. To add to this, they also attend workshops to stay updated on latest cancer treatments. Also, oncologists discuss treatment options with the patient both surgical and nonsurgical methods. As an oncologist, you have many responsibilities, and may have training in treating cancerous tumors.
Salaries for an oncologist range between $200,000 and $300,000 a year. The education needed is 4 years at college. Then, 4 years at medical college. After that, you have to complete an internship and residency. Also, you have to take an exam to get certified. T o work in hospitals or medical organizations, you have to apply for a medical license. The education is long, but the result is worth it.
In oncology, two of the core subjects used is science and math. Science is mostly used, because you are working with anatomy, and the body is like a giant hands-on science activity that oncologists take care of, if there are any, tumors. Math is used in things like proper drug doses for cancer treatments. What I need to do now is start to focus on math and science in school. The two core subjects used are the two core subjects I could work on!
The reason that I want to be an oncologist is because my cousin Emily died of cancer, and it’s what I wanted to do ever since I understood what cancer was and what I could do for a job. I would be well suited for this career, because last summer, I went to a camp for a week, and got in-depth about the body. Also, at the same camp, we dissected a cow heart, and saw EVERYTHING there was to a heart. While there, we learned about some of the diseases there are. From the career inventory, I found out that I would be good in health science. I think I would be good in health science, because I like learning about the body, I like math and science, I love to work alone, I love to solve problems, I like talking to people, and I am curious about the body. In my opinion, me becoming an oncologist would not only make me happy, it’s what my family has been wanting me to find a cure for cancer! Citations "Oncologist Education."
